What on Earth Are Vegan Shoes?

You might have heard about it before - vegan shoes. But what does this actually mean? And why on earth vegan shoes, isn't vegan about what you eat? Yes, that's right, but you can apply the same philosophy to different things, such as fashion. Veganism is about the products we use and the fact that these do not contain any components derived from animals. The most obvious example in fashion is leather. Leather is made of animal skin and is used a lot in fashion. In fact, most of the shoes in your closet are probably made of leather. Now, you might wonder, why would I choose vegan shoes? Well, because that way, you ensure that no animal has suffered in the making of your shoes. And that is an idea definitely worth considering!

No Leather, But What Else?

But if we don't use any leather, what else can we use? A commonly used alternative for leather is polyester. The more complex name for polyester is PET (polyethylene terephthalate), which you might recognize from the plastic bottles and bags. In short, polyester is in fact plastic. Plastic is not particularly good for the environment. In order to produce plastic, fossil fuels are used. Next tot that, plastic is non-biodegradable. And so, if we want to be good for animals, then it shouldn't be at the expense of the environment, right?

That is why it is becoming more and more popular to combine the concepts of veganism and sustainability in fashion. And that is a good thing, because the fashion industry is a very wasteful one (CO2 emissions, pollution and overproduction to name a few).

Veganism and Sustainability, How Does That Work?

So how does it work in the world of shoes? Well, we design vegan women's shoes made of more sustainable materials. For instance, instead of leather, we work with a synthetic alternative that is partially derived from plant-based residual materials. To put it more simply: a synthetic material made of plants (in our case, field corn). This way, there are less fossil fuels needed and on top of that, the material is biodegradable.

Next to that, we use organic materials such as jute and recycled materials such as recycled polyester. Because, in case it is necessary to use regular synthetic materials (For instance, for quality reasons of certain shoe components), let it then at least be recycled where possible to reduce our footprint. And so, with all these new innovative materials, you are sure that when you purchase, you have a positive impact on animals and the environment. Not bad, right?
